Our Beginnings . . .


In 1972, an energetic and experienced registered nurse, Irma Schurman, had a dream. She followed that dream and became the Director of Nurses at Courtland Manor; soon after, she became the Administrator and then the owner.

A life-long ambition was fulfilled, and foreseeing the need for help in providing care for the elderly, Irma introduced her sister, Edith Reedy, and her daughter, Sandra Schurman, into the nursing care field. Together, they began to build a bond with residents and their families, the staff, and the community.

Then, in 1984, they were faced with an important decision: Should they dissolve the business, due to private ownership of the existing building or build a new home for their residents? They decided to build.

And build they did! A modern 78-bed nursing facility opened its doors in 1986. Keeping the name, Courtland Manor, the entire business, including residents, staff, and equipment was moved to its present location at 889 South Little Creek Road in Dover, Delaware. At this time Irma's son, Dan Schurman, joined the staff to help run the newly located business.

Today, Courtland Manor, Inc., is the only family-owned-and-operated skilled nursing facility in Delaware. Irma Schurman along with Sandra, Dan, and other family members still run the day-to-day operations of the business, providing a unique family atmosphere for their residents.
