  Kenny McPeek

Background: August 2, 1962 in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas
Resident: Louisville, Kentucky
Accomplishments: Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Kentucky in 1984

Racing Background: Kenny grew up in Lexington and played football at Tates Creek High School. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, his roommate asked him what he loved.

“It was easy,” he said. “The answer was horse racing.”

Although he went to New York to interview for a position as a stockbroker, he instead took a job as a hotwalker for trainer Shug McGaughey…Took out his trainer’s license in Kentucky in 1985. His father was his first client…Got his first break from Roy Monroe, who’s son Brian had played high school football with Ken. Through Monroe, McPeek was able to get some better quality horses.

First big horse was Tejano Run, who ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 1994 and was second in the 1995 Kentucky Derby. Purchased for just $20,000 for Monroe, Tejano Run earned in excess of $1.1 million on the racetrack.

“The most rewarding aspect of being a trainer is the challenge of working with an owner to discover a diamond in the rough,” said McPeek.

He picked out Repent and Take Charge Lady for $230,000 and $175,000, respectively, at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Yearling Sale. Repent was a solid second in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and won 4 graded stakes including the Louisiana Derby. In referring to his ability to spot yearlings and make them into graded stakes winners, he said,

“I’ve trained enough bad horses to know what they look like and enough good ones to know it when I see one.”

Another astute purchase was She’s A Devil Due. Bought for $30,000, she finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2000…Conditioned the now-retired Harlan’s Holiday to win both the Florida Derby and the Blue Grass Stakes before starting as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby in 2002. McPeek won the Belmont Stakes that same year with Sarava, the longest shot on the board at 70-1.

“It was awesome,” he said. “But I still want to win the Kentucky Derby one day.”

McPeek has won 70 stakes in his career, 30 of them graded. Take Charge Lady is one of his favorites. McPeek also specializes in the purchase of many South American older horses with which he has had success in North America, Hard Buck has already won 3 stakes in as many starts in this country.…Through December 15th, McPeek had started 395 horses with 61 wins, 47 seconds, 43 thirds and $3,626,221 in earnings for 2003.

Mike Goetz

Mike Goetz
Background: June 23, 1965, in Parkersburg, W. VA. ...
Resident: Lexington, KY. ...
Family: Goetz is single, but he and She's a Devil Due have strong family following, which includes his mother and father, Tony and Nancy Goetz, and his father, Jim McCormick, who all live in Lexington, plus his sister, Diane Dowling, and his nephew, Brandon, who live in West Palm Beach, FL. ...

"For my mom and dad, $2 across the board is big time," he said. "They splurged (at the Alcibiades) and bet $20-$30. The sparkle in their faces was great, and they get their friends excited." She's a Devil Due is his first horse ... Goetz and trainer Ken McPeek met when they attended Tates Creek High School in Lexington ... Goetz originally wanted to claim a horse, said McPeek, "but I wouldn't do it". I thought it was a bad investment. I felt like he'd be better off if he'd buy a yearling ... that it would be worthwhile in the long run if he waited and developed a young horse." ...

Goetz works at Toyota's Georgetown, KY., plant, where he is an assistant manager on the production/assembly line ...  Goetz said he had asked 8 or 10 other potential partners to go in on a horse, "most with children who didn't want to take the risk," he said. "Brian, he turned me down probably twice, then said, "Let's go ahead." when I was trying to sell this whole thing to Brian I said, "We could be on television." "Really, deep down, I know I was giving him some bull, hoping it would happen. Now I look like a genious!" ...

Self-described adrenaline junkie, but sold his motorcycle, new car, rental property, and took out a second mortgage on his house to afford She's a Devil Due ... "I've gambled all my life whether it be casinos, dogs, whatever," he said. Now he can pay off that mortgage, and is considering going into business for himself, perhaps as a franchise restaurant owner, as well as putting together additional horse-owning partnerships...

Said cousins he hasn't heard from for years, folks he delivered the paper to 25 years ago, and other fans have written to him after reading about him in local newspapers ... "It's amazing how a horse can bring this much to people's lives," he said. "I've scored that touchdown in the last second, made the home run in the ninth inning... this is another degree. This is the happiest time in my life. It's a great opportunity."
